The Band is a traditional format Brass Band comprising Bb Cornets in three
sections with two soloists, an Eb Soprano Cornet, Bb Flugelhorn, Eb Tenor Horns,
Bb Baritones, Bb Euphoniums, Trombones and Bass Trombones and an array of Tubas
(or Basses) in Eb and in double Bbb! Behind this there is a battery of drums and
percussion of every imaginable kind! The repertoire ranges from traditional
"brass band music", spirited marches and the like, through jazz, swing, rock and
pop, as well as contemporary works composed and arranged by the band's musical
director and others. There is truly something for everyone.
Brass Banding has a definite cycle through the Seasons. Summer is our busiest
time playing concerts most weekends, Autumn and the early months of each year
are spent preparing for the twice yearly Southern Counties' Brass Band
Association contests at which the band regularly does well. These contests are
held in Brighton in the Spring and in Folkestone in the Autumn. November brings
Remembrance Day duties as well as fireworks festivals, and December sees us
joyfully playing our way to Christmas.
The next generation is vitally important to music, and to the arts as a
whole, and Sussex Brass are proud to have run the Silverdale Learners Group for
young players of any age. This learning band has given performances in its own
right, as well as winning first place in the Brass Section of the Hastings
Festival. A number of present Sussex Brass players graduated from the Silverdale
Band, which has added to the improved performance of Sussex Brass.
